1. First of all, Welcome to Spain and Europe Cracker!
How you managed through the years and after nine studio albums how are you facing your next Spanish tour ?

We are very much looking forward to coming to spain. We were here this summer at Azkena and it was fantastic.

2. How did «Berkeley to Bakersfield» come together guys and should be a story behind the title of record or song? In sitting down to record «Berkeley to Bakersfield»what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them?

It’s really two separate disks. Two different projects. I had been working on a set of country and alt-country songs for what I thought would be a single disk. I had songs like California Country Boy, Almond Grove, King of Bakersfield and I’m Sorry Baby in my back pocket. These are the basis of what we ended up calling the Bakersfield disc. While working on the «Bakersfield» songs the Kerosene Hat line-up of Cracker went into drummer Michael Urbano’s studio in Berkeley California to see if we could maybe come up with some new music. We came up with most of the music for the Berkeley disk in those three days.

So now we had two different batches of music. I played some of the Berkeley stuff for my wife (and manager) and then we listened to the country stuff. It didn’t seem like they were exactly the same album. But somehow along the way we got the idea to do two disks. One named «Berkeley» and one we called «Bakersfield.» You may not realize this but Bakersfield is the other Nashville, it’s California’s country capital and home to it’s own legacy of country music.

In a way having a country disk and a rock disk explains cracker in a very truthful way.

3. How was aged sound of your first album back in 1992 with «Cracker» and this new one «Berkeley to Bakersfield» (2014) and how you stay in terms of general assessments and results by the public and critics so far and Which are the main differences between this one and previous ones like «Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey» (2009)?

I think this new album is not so different than the first two cracker albums… Think about it the songs Mr Wrong and Lonesome Johnny Blues, Dr Bernice and Loser would all work on the Bakersfield disk. Songs like Movie Star, Don’t fuck me up with peace and love, the b-sides from Kerosene hat River Euphrates and Bad Vibes Everybody could be on the Berkeley Disk. I think the reason this album gets such good reviews is because we move forward, but we don’t forgot how cracker got started.

4. How important is Johnny Hickman in Cracker and why do you like to work with a great number of guest artists on your albums so far?

Cracker is Johnny Hickman and myself. There is no cracker without Hickman. No one plays guitar like him. It’s all in his hands. He has balls in his hands. Wait that came out wrong.

We purposely set up the band as only two members. That way we could record albums with different people every time we made an album. It keeps it fresh, and it is always really fun to collaborate with as many people as possible. So Cracker is like Daft Punk without the stupid helmets.

Cracker somos Johnny Hickman y yo. No hay ningún Cracker como Hickman. Nadie toca la guitarra como él. Está todo en sus manos. Tiene los huevos en sus manos. Espere que me he explicado mal.

5 .What do you like most: writing, producing, radio host, run your record company?

I like recording music the most. The next is touring. I’m not really interested in running a record label or studio any more. I only want to work on music that I write and perform.

6. Could you tell Spanish audience musical background and Who inspires you to do what you do and which musicians that have influenced your sound and approach to creating your own style of music?

It changes all the time. I think there is something about The Kinks that will always be close to my soul. They were sort of like a more fucked up beatles. Sarcastic and funny. High concepts that often didn’t’ work but were beautiful anyway. Risk takers. The Clash were the last great eclectic rock band. After that most people were really good at only one sub-genre of rock. There are tons of obscure young bands and obscure old bands that inspire me everyday. Can I give them the publicity? The Dexateens, Ty Segall, Deerhunter, A.C. Neuman, The Glands, Lee Bains and the Glory Fires, J Roddy Walston and the Business, Kurt Vile, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Selmanaires, Black Lips, Wand, Built to Spill, Brett Netson, The Black Angels, there are so many.

¿Puedo publicitaras? The Dexateens, Ty Segall, Deerhunter, A.C. Neuman, The Glands, Lee Bains and the Glory Fires, J Roddy Walston and the Business, Kurt Vile, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Selmanaires, Black Lips, Wand, Built to Spill, Brett Netson, The Black Angels, es que hay tantas.

7. How is Richmond, Redlands or San Antonio musical scene and their culture of Rock and Rock right now and specially talking about Rock and Roll, Blues, Soul, Americana, etc?

I split my time between Richmond Virginia, and Athens Georgia. Richmond has a good music scene, but it’s more punk rock and metal. You know the biggest band is lamb of god. Athen’s Georgia Music scene is amazing. Still strong as it was in the days of REM and The B-52. No one style dominates. Jam bands like Widespread Panic, Alt Country like Drive By Truckers and Futurebirds, Lera Lynn, All kinds of indie rock like Of Montreal, Elf Power, New Madrid, Eureka California, Mothers…. So many bands.

Redlands is a really small town. There are no bands. Sorry family.

8. What’s the seediest place in which you have ever played and What’s the most absurd thing that’s ever happened to you during a show? What do you drink during the shows and what kind of bad things do you do while playing?

In 1986 at a Camper Van Beethoven concert someone threw raw chicken livers at us. One stuck to jonathans violin. The seediest place we played was the world famous CBGBs. It really was a shithole. And a ripoff. I don’t understand why people romanticize it. In the poor and down on it’s luck working class city of Hull in UK there is a club most would regard as a seedy shithole. It’s called the Adelphi. But every great band from UK played there. It holds maybe 100 people? But the people are just fucking nice salt of the earth people. When we were there last time our van slid of on the ice in the parking lot and was sort of stuck in a ditch. We told this to everyone in the venue when we played. When we were finished playing the audience went outside and pushed our van back onto the street. That’s rock.

9. What kind of music you guys listen to while on the road in your van and who carries the biggest suitcase and what is in it? Any good song, record, band you lately like ? Do you know Spanish Rock or Rock artist, etc?

I don’t like to listen to music while driving. Except for occasionally old school gangster hip hop. «Damn it feel good to be a gangster» you know what I mean. Everyone else has headphones on. I don’t know what they are listening to ? Christian Black Metal? Self Hypnosis tapes? Backwards Beatles records?

Johnny has the biggest suitcase. But it’s really light. As if it’s empty. We are pretty sure it has nothing in it. It’s a mystery since the beginning of the band.

No me gusta escuchar música mientras conduzco.

10. Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you Cracker? and Would you mind send Dirty Rock readers a message and encourege them to see Cracker in your upcoming shows in Spain?

Of course come and the support act. Every support act deserves the attention of the audience.
