Bror Gunnar Jansson’s voice has never been shy about walking into dark rooms and calling out what it finds there.

On People! – the new project credited to Bror Gunnar Jansson & The Escapism, released September 12 – he trades some of the one-man-band grit that made his name for a fuller, retro-soul palette. The swap doesn’t soften him. It frames him differently: in a warm Hammond glow and a steady groove that lets his storytelling land harder.

How this came together is simple and human. The Escapism is the backing outfit formed around longtime friend and producer Christopher Cantillo; the two have a friendship “that spans more than half of their lives,” and the material on People! has been quietly brewing between them for years.

The record is released via Cantillo’s Hxng Jazz Records in partnership with Playground Music, and the singles that led the way served as a keyhole peep into the album’s intent: classic-sounding grooves with very contemporary concerns.

It’s music that you groove along to, but then it makes you sit a little straighter when you take in the words.
“A Refugee,” released in mid-August, is the record’s clearest political heart. It tells a poignant, human story – “Taliban’s taken over our street / Can’t stay here but don’t want to leave / Only one decision left, we’ll have to go” – and keeps the song aimed where the blame lies: at the violence that makes people flee.
“A Refugee”, publicado a mediados de agosto, es el corazón político más claro del trabajo. A repeated, aching refrain asks, in effect, what you do when there is nowhere to go: “In this world we have no home… Where do you go if there’s no home?”

The arrangement leans into slow, soulful organ and a mournful pulse reminiscent of Bill Withers that lets the lines breathe. It’s political without being pedantic; sentimental yet not sappy.

Elsewhere on the album, the songs ride between righteous groove and late-night confession. The title track, “People!,” and cuts with names like “Occupied,” “A Beggar” and “At The Penitentiary” throw the same spotlight on vulnerability, displacement and guilt. At one point the record even voices the blunt image of “blood on our hands.”
El resto del disco oscila entre el groove combativo y la confesión íntima de madrugada. La pista que da nombre al álbum, “People!”, junto a canciones como “Occupied”, “A Beggar” o “At The Penitentiary”, ponen el foco en la vulnerabilidad, el desarraigo y la culpa. En un momento dado, el álbum incluso suelta la imagen cruda de “blood on our hands” (la sangre en nuestras manos).
Sonically, the record wears its inspiration on its sleeve: seventies soul tones (Hammond, tight grooves), a gospel tinge here and there, the occasional psychedelic turn… Yet Jansson’s instinct for bleak, cinematic narratives keep a through line back to his gothic-blues past.
