¿Puede una banda instrumental que mezcla psicodelia clásica, blues, doom y sludge volverse tan reconocible que dejes de escuchar los géneros y empieces a escuchar a la banda?
Esa es la pregunta que no dejaba de hacerme mientras escuchaba a Lord Elephant.

Can an instrumental band blending classic psychedelia, blues, doom and sludge become distinctive enough that you eventually stop hearing the genres and start hearing the band?
That’s the question I kept coming back to while listening to Lord Elephant.
I think the answer might be yes.
Lord Elephant empezaron en Florencia (Italia) en 2016. Como no publicaron Cosmic Awakening (Heavy Psych Sounds) hasta 2022, parece que se pasaron los primeros años haciendo lo que las bandas (y el resto de los mortales) hacemos a veces: averiguar qué querían ser de mayores. Y luego parece que decidieron que la mejor manera de averiguarlo era salir a tocar. Mucho.
Pasaron años girando con algunas bandas reconocidas como Bongzilla, Church of Misery, Eyehategod, Nebula y Weedeater, y esos kilómetros de carretera se notan en su segundo disco.
Lord Elephant started out in Florence, Italy, back in 2016. Since they didn’t release Cosmic Awakening (Heavy Psych Sounds) until 2022, they apparently spent their first few years doing what bands (and the rest of us mortals) sometimes do: trying to figure their out who they wanted to be when they grew up. And then it looks like they decided that the best way to figure out what kind of band they actually were was to go out and play. A lot.
They spent years touring with heavy hitters like Bongzilla, Church of Misery, Eyehategod, Nebula and Weedeater, and you can hear those miles in their sophomore record.
Empezaron sonando como tres tíos dejando que la cinta rodara y viendo adónde les llevaba el viaje. El debut era bastante chill; música que sonaba a lámpara de lava con mucho fuzz. Un poco lio a veces. ¿Qué debut no lo es?
El mundo siempre necesitará un poco más de fuzz (yo paso de cencerros, pero tampoco voy a discutir con Christopher Walken), pero hay momentos en Cosmic Awakening en los que el caos y el fuzz se van a un lado y la sección rítmica, pausada y firme, se queda con todo. Se forma una paz rara dentro de mi cabeza. Como estar en medio de una tormenta, pero sin mojarte.
They started out sounding like three guys letting the tape roll and seeing where the trip took them. The debut was pretty chill; kind of fuzzy lava-lamp-esque music. A little messy at times. What debut isn’t?
This world will always need a little more fuzz (cowbells aside – I’m not one not to disagree with Christopher Walken), but there are times during Cosmic Awakeningwhen I feel like I end up relegating the chaos and fuzz to the rear, letting my senses become more in tune with the unhurried rhythm section. It creates this kind of defiant headbanging peace inside my skull. I’m in the storm, but not part of it.
Ultra Soul (Heavy Psych Sounds, 2026), su segundo álbum publicado el pasado enero, tiene una historia más interesante que el típico “segundo disco = mejor disco”.
Ahora Lord Elephant suenan a lo que pasa cuando una banda de jams se pasa años aprendiendo a hacer que la improvisación funcione delante de una sala llena de gente.
Ultra Soul (Heavy Psych Sounds, 2026) their second album released this past January, has a more interesting story than your average “second album = better album.”
Lord Elephant now sound like what happens when a jam band spends years learning how to make the improvisation work in front of a room full of people.
Creo que lo más jodido de ser una banda instrumental es mantener el interés. Cuando nadie canta, el riff tiene que hablar por todos. No hay estribillos que se te claven ni una voz que venga a salvar el tema. Y luego está el otro problema, sobre todo cuando te mueves en el stoner-psych-metal: en algún momento, un riff enorme de fuzz puede convertirse en papel pintado. Papel pintado muy guay, ojo. Pero papel pintado al fin y al cabo.
Lord Elephant se lo saltan. Parecen haberlo entendido: la respuesta no es más. Es contraste.
I think the hardest part about being an instrumental band must be staying interesting. When nobody is singing, the riff has to do all the talking – no catchy choruses or a great vocal performance to come along and rescue a song. And there’s another potential problem (especially when you’re playing stoner-psych-metal): at some point, a huge fuzzed-out riff can become wallpaper. Really awesome wallpaper, obviously. But still wallpaper.
Lord Elephant avoids this trap. They seem to have figured out that the answer isn’t necessarily more. It’s contrast.
En su debut, parecían contentos con dejar que la lámpara de lava burbujeara a su ritmo. Ahora han roto el cristal. Ultra Soul suena a una banda que ha aprendido a domar su propio caos, convirtiendo esas tormentas de improvisación en rayos que te parten.
Y tengo curiosidad por ver a Tommaso Urzino detrás del kit. En disco tiene algo que no sé definir. Quizá lo descubra cuando los vea en directo.
With their debut, they seemed content to let the lava lamp slowly bubble. Now, they’ve shattered the glass. Ultra Soul sounds like a band that has learned how to rein in its own chaos, bending those sprawling, improvisational storms into devastating lightning strikes.
And I’m especially interested in seeing Tommaso Urzino behind the kit. On record, he’s got something I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe I can figure it out when I see them live.
Otro reto de las bandas instrumentales: la guitarra se convierte en la voz emocional. Si tu guitarra es tu cantante, ¿qué quieres que nos cuente?
Ahí es donde Lord Elephant parecen haber entendido algo que muchas bandas instrumentales pesadas olvidan: ser pesado todo el rato hace que lo pesado no pese nada.
El silencio antes de algunos de los desarrollos más grandes es de lo que más me gusta de Ultra Soul. No te tiran riffs sin parar. A veces lo retiran casi todo.
Me encanta ir a bolos, pero ver a una banda ensayar, aún más. Aparte de estar en primera fila, ver el proceso y escuchar cómo se desarrolla una jam (y si el día es bueno, pillar algún momento de magia), uno de mis momentos favoritos es cuando los amplis se encienden y el guitarrista hace ese primer golpe hacia abajo.
Another challenge instrumental bands face is that the guitar effectively takes on the role of the emotional voice of the band. If your guitar is your singer, what do you want it to tell us?
That’s where Lord Elephant seem to understand something that a lot of heavy instrumental bands tend to forget: being heavy all the time makes heavy meaningless.
Their use of silence before some of the bigger crescendos is one of the things I really like about Ultra Soul. They don’t just keep throwing riffs at you no-stop. Sometimes they pull everything back almost completely.
I’m a sucker for a gig, but I also love getting the chance to watch a band practice. Apart from being front row, watching the process and listening to a jam unfold (and, if everyone’s having a particularly good day, catching the occasional bit of magic) one of my favorite moments is when the amps first kick in and the guitarist plays that first downstroke.
O lo contrario: después de estar un par de horas escuchando a una banda trastear, y los amplis se apagan.

Or the opposite: after you’ve been listening to a band screw around for an hour or two and the amps go quiet.
You don’t fully appreciate the size of a wall of amps until someone switches them on or off.
Contrast creates weight. And Lord Elephant knows that quiet can be part of a riff’s impact.

Instead of a bunch of separate ingredients, it becomes one thing.
“Black River Blues” es otro tema al que vuelvo, en parte porque es un poco desastre divertido. Me llega distinto casi cada vez que lo escucho, según el día.
Quizá esa sea lo importante: ahora todo parece una combinación de drone, doom, post-rock, prog, sludge, stoner, heavy blues, rock psicodélico. Tener los ingredientes es una cosa. Hacer que suenen a ti es otra.
Lord Elephant están en ello.
“Black River Blues” is another one I keep coming back to, partly because it’s kind of a fun mess. It hits me differently almost every time I listen, depending on my mood.
Maybe that’s the thing: today, everything seems to be some combination of drone, doom, post-rock, prog, sludge, stoner, heavy blues, psychedelic rock. Having the right ingredients is one thing. Making them sound like you is another.
Lord Elephant are getting there.
