No sé exactamente en qué momento Toundra se convirtió en “una de mis bandas”.
Lo que sí tengo claro es que fueron probablemente la primera banda española “moderna” de la que me enamoré de verdad después de mudarme a España. Sé que los vi en Joy Eslava en 2013. También me acuerdo perfectamente de haberlos visto en el Palacio de Deportes con orquesta en 2016 (sublime). Y prácticamente cada vez que tocaban cerca de Madrid, allí estaba yo.
I’m not sure exactly when Toundra became one of my bands.
I do know they were probably the first “modern” Spanish band I fell properly in love with after moving to Spain. I know I saw them at Joy Eslava back in 2013. I also remember full well seeing them at the Palacio de Deportes with a full orchestra in 2016 (sublime). And pretty much every time they played anywhere near Madrid, there I was.
También me acuerdo de cuando David López “Macón”, de Adrift, se unió a la banda. Para mí fue un antes y un después.
Durante esa década (más o menos, porque la pandemia también hizo de las suyas), no los vi en directo tanto como a mi otro primer amor español, Hamlet, por ejemplo. Pero cada vez que tocaban cerca de Madrid, allí estaba.
Así que cuando desaparecieron, lo noté.
Cuando volvieron el año pasado, también lo noté.
I also remember when David López “Macón” from Adrift joined the band. It was pretty much a game changer for me.
During that decade (give or take, since the pandemic played its dirty part in there, too), I didn’t see them live as much as my other Spanish first love, Hamlet, for example. But every time they played near Madrid, I was there.
So when they disappeared, I noticed.
When they came back last year, I noticed that too.
Su regreso triunfal a los escenarios con la renovada formación: Alberto Tocados (bajo y sintetizadores), Álex Pérez (percusión), Macón (guitarra y sintetizadores) y Jorge García (guitarra) en Bilbao el 1 de mayo de 2025, abriendo el ciclo Hiriz Hiri 2025, coincidió más o menos con “Rapier”, su primer single del próximo LP, Siete, que sale el 9 de octubre.
En verdad, “Rapier” me descuadró un poquito. Sonaba a Toundra, obviamente, pero también a una banda en movimiento.
Their triumphant return to the stagewith their refreshedlineup of Alberto Tocados (bass and synths), Álex Pérez (percussion), Macón (guitar and synths), and Jorge García (guitar) in Bilbao on May 1, 2025, was right about the same time they teased us with “Rapier”, their first single from the upcoming LP, Siete, due October 9.
To be honest, “Rapier” made me do a double take. It sounded like Toundra, obviously, but also like a band in motion.
Y ahora llega “30960”, un guiño a Sant Feliu de Guíxols (y, supongo, al casi obsoleto servicio postal), un lugar que se ha convertido en fundamental para la banda y donde han grabado buena parte de su música a lo largo de los años.
Musicalmente, también es un buen recordatorio de que Toundra no necesitan veinte minutos para dejar claro lo que quieren transmitir. Suena como si alguien hubiera abierto la puerta y hubiera dejado entrar a la Toundra OG.
And now there’s “30960,” a nod to Sant Feliu de Guíxols (and, I suppose, the almost-obsolete postal service), a place that has become fundamental to the band and where a significant part of their music has been recorded over the years.
Musically, it’s also a pretty good reminder that Toundra don’t need twenty minutes to make their point. It sounds like somebody opened the door and let the OG Toundra back into the room.
Esta es la Toundra de la que me enamoré: esa sección rítmica inquebrantable, esas guitarras que adoramos… Y no os preocupéis – ¡la melodía sigue ahí! Porque incluso cuando Toundra suben el volumen, siguen siendo Toundra.
Después de la marcha de Esteban (que ahora lleva comunicación de una empresa que, personalmente, considero “cuestionable” por el origen de buena parte de su financiación) y un largo periodo de silencio, llegó otro cambio importante: Adrift, tristemente, dijo adiós oficialmente después de 27 años de música, y Toundra incorporaron a otro exmiembro.
Jorge García (guitarras y sintetizadores) no es exactamente un desconocido en el universo Toundra, ya que lleva años formando parte del mundo visual de la banda (una de las cosas que más me flipan de esta banda), pero ahora está oficialmente dentro de la maquinaria.
This is the Toundra I remember falling for: that unwavering rhythm section, those guitars we love… And, no worries! The melody is still there. Because even when Toundra get noisy, they’re still Toundra.
After the departure of Esteban (who now runs communications for a company I personally consider “questionable” given the origin of much of its funding) and a long period of silence, there was another significant change: Adrift sadly officially called it a day after 27 years of music, and Toundra brought another former member into the fold.
Jorge García (guitars and synths) isn’t exactly a stranger to the Toundra universe since he’s been part of the band’s visual world (one of the band’s aspects that I absolutely love) for years, but now he’s officially inside the machine.
Siete llega el 9 de octubre, de forma independiente, con la banda siguiendo haciendo las cosas a su manera.
Me interesa especialmente hacia dónde van a ir. “Rapier” mostraba un lado de esta nueva Toundra, y “30960” nos recuerda que no se han olvidado del otro.
Los riffs siguen ahí. El peso sigue ahí. Las melodías siguen ahí. Y, por suerte, ¡nadie ha decidido de repente que Toundra necesitaban un vocalista!
Siete arrives on October 9, independently, with the band continuing to do things on their own terms.
I’m particularly interested in where that leaves them. “Rapier” showed one side of this new Toundra, and “30960” reminds us that they haven’t forgotten the other one.
The riffs are still there. The weight is still there. The melodies are still there. And, thankfully, nobody suddenly decided Toundra needed a vocalist.
Quizá este sea el siguiente capítulo de Toundra (sea lo que sea que eso signifique). Esperemos que la banda nos diga algo sobre ello (¡atentos a la próxima entrevista aquí en Dirty Rock Magazine!).

Así que sí. Toundra han cambiado.
La formación ha cambiado (again). La música ha cambiado.
Pero eso está bien.
De hecho, quizá ahí esté la clave. Una tundra, por definición, es un lugar donde las cosas parecen estar quietas. Suelo congelado. Crecimiento lento. Un paisaje que no grita precisamente “cambio”…
Pero Toundra no es un lugar que se congeló en el tiempo. Es un lugar que siguió vivo sin dejar nunca de deshelarse.
