Entrevista a Levi Parham con motivo de su nueva gira española 2019:
Hola Levi, bienvenido a nuestro país, ¿qué puede esperar el público español de tu próxima gira por nuestras tierras presentando el nuevo álbum “It’s All Good” junto con tu banda compuesta por Dustin Pittsley y Jesse Aycock a las guitarras, Aaron Boehler al bajo y Dylan Aycock en la batería, una auténtico lujo, de banda Them Tulsa Boys?
Básicamente vais a ver a cinco tíos encima del escenario tocando como locos y partiéndose el culo.
Creaste con “It’s All Good” una colección rica y escandalosa que instantáneamente los ubica entre los mejores discos de Americana publicados el año pasado en el que su fuerza, franqueza y humildad, a diferencia de otras grabaciones influidas por la edad de oro del rock and roll de los 70. ¿Crees que esa extraña alquimia del sonido Muscle Shoals y el sonido de Tulsa crearon ese efecto?
Esa fue la idea y la intención. Sabía que si lograba reunir a estos músicos y llevarlos a un lugar como Muscle Shoals, pasaría algo mágico y así fue.
The Sooner State apodado el estado de Oklahoma, es el hogar de Woody Guthrie, y como puede esperarse de una leyenda como esa, su sonido todavía se escucha en todo su estado y país. Ese estado es un semillero impresionante de músicos que reúne a gente como John Fullbright, John Moreland, Parker Millsap, JD McPherson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Leon Russell, Paul Benjaman Band, Dustin Pittsley, Jesse Aycock y muchos más. Pero Oklahoma no solamente se trata y enaltece la música de raíces. La escena es ecléctica que va desde el folk y country, pero también punk, pop indie y cosas que desafían la categorización. ¿Crees que nos estamos enfrentando un nuevo resurgimiento del sonido de Tulsa y la música de Oklahoma con la aparición de nuevos talentos y grandes álbumes durante estos últimos años?
No sé si lo hubiese llamado resurgimiento. La escena musical en Tulsa y en Oklahoma en general siembre ha estado bastante bien. Últimamente parece que hay más oportunidades para irse de gira y compartir música que en el pasado. Creo que es simplemente la mayor facilidad de conocer y acceder a estos artistas y saber que son de Oklahoma.
Diez canciones maravillosas de Levi Parham y Them Tulsa Boys And Girls en tu nuevo álbum “It’s All Good”, una transición perfecta hacia un nuevo viaje, más orientado hacia el rock que su predecesor. Tu barril musical de envejece en este álbum mezclando ingredientes como el blues, el soul, el country, el rock e incluso la psicodelia. Acompañado en el álbum por el preciado John Fullbright y los hermanos Dylan y Jesse Aycock en esta gira, siendo el último miembro de la banda The Hard Working Americans, entre otros, además de otro grande como Paul Benjaman, el “hijo bastardo de JJ Cale” , que publicó hace unos años una obra maestra llamada “Sneaker” (2015), ¿estás contento con el resultado del álbum y cómo fue aquella experiencia?
No hay palabras para expresar lo surrealista que ha sido todo. Me siento muy orgulloso de todo lo que conseguimos hacer. También estoy totalmente agradecido por todas las personas que estuvieron involucradas en el proyecto y al legendario estudio donde grabamos el disco darle las gracias.
Eres uno de esos músicos que trabajas con muchísimos músicos técnicamente competentes, y eso se refleja en tus conciertos repletos de improvisación. ¿Llevas contigo esa misma espontaneidad al estudio?
Todo lo que hago menos los acordes de las letras es espontáneo. Tengo algunas ideas, sé más o menos hacia donde quiero llegar o como quiero que suenen mis canciones, pero básicamente dejo que los músicos involucrados hagan lo que mejor saben hacer. Creo que así logramos un sonido más auténtico. He seleccionado los mejores músicos posibles para el estudio y las giras, y no tiene sentido entorpecerles. Prefiero dejarles hacer lo suyo.
¿Quiénes han sido algunas de tus principales influencias musicales, pasadas o presentes?
Me ha marcado e influenciado toda clase de música durante toda mi vida. Pero sobre todo la música de mis amigos. Me emociono al verlos por ahí, currando a tope, haciendo música que significa algo. Les escucho de verdad. Soy fan de todos los artistas que han contribuido en algo en este disco. Lauren Barth es increíble. Jesse Aycock es a genio. Podría hablar sin parar sobre la música que hacen mis amigos. Aaron Lee Tasjan es otro colega y amigo que me inspira muchísimo, todo lo que hace es tan atrevido y encima es un encanto de tío.
Como compositor, ¿puedes hablarme sobre los temas que desarrollas en tus canciones?
Suelo escribir y componer desde una perspectiva personal. Por lo tanto la mayoría de las letras provienen de experiencias propias o de cosas que están pasando en mi vida. Intento espolvorearlas con muchas cosas para que todo el mundo pueda sentirse identificado de alguna manera. Eso es lo bonito de componer canciones y sobre la vida. Todos tenemos una historia familiar. Estamos todos conectados de algún modo.
Si algún artista vivo o muerto quisiera interpretar y versionar una de tus canciones, ¿quién sería?
Captain Beefheart.

La mejor banda de rock’n’roll serían los Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Sin ellos nunca me habría enamorado de la música.

Deberías saber que nunca vas a ver un grupo y un directo como el nuestro. No estoy alardeando es la verdad.
¿Cuál es tu historia más loca vivida en un concierto?
¡El bolo más loco? Pues una noche después del concierto nos fuimos a dormir. Fue una locura total.

Hola Levi, welcome to Europe and Spain, what can Spanish audience look forward to at your upcoming tour in our country showing your new álbum “It’s All Good“ with your band Dustin Pittsley and Jesse Aycock on guitars, Aaron Boehler on bass and Dylan Aycock on drums. A band of authentic luxury, Them Tulsa Boys?
Expect five dudes on stage playing their asses off.
You created with “It’s All Good“?a rich and raucous collection that instantly places them among Americana’s finest its force, directness, and performance not unlike some lost recording unearthed from the golden age of 70s rock ‘n’ roll. Do you think that strange alchemy of Muscle Shoals and the Tulsa sound created that effect?
That was the whole intention. I knew that if I got this group of musicians together and took them to an iconic place like Muscle Shoals, no doubt magic would happen. And it did.
The Sooner State is the home of Woody Guthrie, and as you might expect from a legend like that, his sound is still heard across Oklahoma. The state is a hotbed for Americana music, raising the likes of John Fullbright, John Moreland, Parker Millsap , JD McPherson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Leon Russell, Paul Benjaman Band, Dustin Pittsley and Jesse Aycock and countless others. But Oklahoma isn’t just about roots music. The scene is eclectic, with incredible folk and country, but also punk, indie pop and things that defy categorization.Do you think we are facing a new resurgence of Tulsa sound and Oklahoma music secene with the appearance of new talents and great albums during these last years?
I don’t know if I would call it a resurgence. The music community in Tulsa, and in Oklahoma at large, has always been really great. I think in recent years, opportunities for touring and sharing music have gotten easier for artists, so I think it’s just a matter of there being more access to the knowledge that these artists exist and that they call Oklahoma home.
Ten wonderful songs by Levi Parham and Them Tulsa Boys And Girls on their new album “It’s All Good”, a perfect transition towards a new journey, more oriented towards rock than its predecessor. Parham’s music barrel ages in this album mixing ingredients such as blues, soul, country, rock and even psychedelia. Accompanied on the album by the prized John Fullbright and the brothers Dylan and Jesse Aycock being on this tour, being this last member of the band The Hard Working Americans, among others plus another great, Paul Benjaman, the “bastard son of JJ Cale”, who published a few years a masterpiece called “Sneaker” (2015). Happy with the result of the álbum and how was that experience?
I can’t tell you how surreal the whole experience was. I’m very proud of what we did and so grateful of what we were able to accomplish, from the people involved to the legendary studio we did it in.
You are one, and you work with so many technically proficient musicians, that your live show has a ton of improv. Do you take that same spontaneity into the studio with you?
Everything I do, aside from the chords and the lyrics, is spontaneous. I have ideas or directions I have in mind for how I want a song to be or where I want it to go, but most everything I leave up to the musicians involved to do what they do. I think you get a more authentic sound that way. I picked the best musicians I could ever have on stage or in the studio. No sense in me standing in their way, just let em do their thing.
Who have been some of your major musical influences, past or present?
I’ve been influenced by all kinds of music over the course of my life. I’d say what inspires me and influences me the most today are my friends’ music. I get such a thrill out of all my friends out there working hard and making music that means something. I genuinely listen and am a fan of all the artists on this album. Lauren Barth is incredible. Jesse Aycock is a genius. I could gush over all my friends’ music. Aaron Lee Tasjan, he’s another friend that really inspires me. He’s so daring with everything he does, and on top of that he’s a sweetheart.
As a songwriter, can you tell me about the topics that you develop in your songs?
I’m usually writing from my own perspective, so most themes are directly from experiences I’ve had or things going on in my life. I try to sprinkle in as much as I can to make everyone feel like it’s theirs. But that’s the thing about songs and about life, we all have a familiar story. We are all connected somehow.
If any artists dead or alive wanted to cover one of your songs: who would that be?

The best rock n’ roll band ever is…
The best rock band ever would have to be Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Without them, I’d have never fallen in love with music.
The most underrated rock n’ roll band is…
Again, Dr Teeth and The Electric Mayhem are the best there ever was and ever will be.
What should new listeners know about Levi Parham & Them Tulsa Boys?
You should know that you won’t hear a band or a show quite like this one. That’s not a brag, that’s just the truth.
What’s your craziest gig story?
Craziest gig story? One night, directly after a show, we slept. It was craaazy.
