The new single from Electric Hydra has some history to it: it was written, shelved, rewritten, retuned and finally filmed under conditions that forced action instead of waiting. The result feels lived-in, stubborn and heavy. You feel it before you even know why.
El nuevo single de Electric Hydra tiene una trayectoria de película: se escribió, se guardó en un cajón, se reescribió, se cambió de tono y al final se grabó en vídeo a la carrera, sin ganas de esperar más. El resultado suena vivido, cabezota y con kilos de peso. Y lo notas antes de tener tiempo de procesarlo.
Formed in 2017, bassist Ellinor Andersson and vocalist Sanne Karlsson lock in with Dennis Åhman on drums and guitarists Emil Andersson and Adi Selimic. Electric Hyrdra is often cited as one of the most exciting new names on the Swedish rock scene, and this track explains why.

Where their previous teaser “Scent of Blood” opened the door gently, “It’s All Just Dirt” bursts in, riff-heavy. It’s the kind of song that skips the buildup and goes straight for the pressure point. Just blunt, precise weight.
Su anterior adelanto “Scent of Blood” llamaba a la puerta, pero “It’s All Just Dirt” la echa abajo a riffazos. Es la clase de tema que se salta los preliminares y va directo al grano. Un golpe seco y exacto.
Lyrically, Karlsson maps out terrain that is all too familiar these days: mental loops, disconnection, the sense of moving without moving at all. It reads like erosion and the quiet realization that sometimes things don’t resolve, they just wear away.

A key change sharpened that wear. Originally written in a darker B, the song was moved to the power-chord-loaded Drop D, making it heavier and more physical; turbocharged with bursts of muscle that offset the lyrical melancholy. There’s less shredding than on earlier tracks, but that only makes the riffs slam harder and your neck ache more from the headbanging. Especially during that killer breakdown: perfectly timed, blunt, and gone before it has time to overstay.
Un cambio de tono convirtió ese desgaste en algo cortante. Compuesta en un Si más oscurito, la canción se mudó al Drop D, el reino del power-chord, ganando un peso más físico y una potencia a reventar que contrasta con la melancolía de la letra. Hay menos guitarreo que en temas anteriores, pero eso solo hace que los riffs peguen más fuerte y el cuello note más el castigo. Sobre todo en ese breakdown que te volará la cabeza: es un hostión que llega en el momento justo y se esfuma antes de que te canses.
The video was shot in an old sewing factory in Sexdrega under unique circumstances: illness meant the band couldn’t film together, so separate performances and green-screen shots were stitched in. That rush (“we just wanted to get it done,” as Ellinor puts it) makes it all the more convincing: direct, raw, immediate.
Black-and-white images are pierced by a single red intrusion when the breakdown hits. If you’re prone to losing yourself in YouTube spirals of Chelsea Wolfe, Cult of Luna, Tool or Deftones videos, the aesthetics will probably feel like home. Think Amenra’s weight with Helmet’s industrial post-grunge bite. (Oh, and if you miss the strobes, “Scent of Blood” has you covered!)
El vídeo se grabó en una fábrica de costura en Sexdrega con algunas complicaciones: una enfermedad obligó a rodar por separado, uniendo tomas sueltas y croma, de prisa y corriendo. En verdad, esa urgencia – “queríamos sacarlo ya de una vez”, dice Ellinor – le da más veracidad: es directo, crudo, y en tu cara.
Las imágenes en blanco y negro son atravesadas por una única y sangrante intrusión de rojo cuando llega el breakdown. Si Chelsea Wolfe, Cult of Luna, Tool o Deftones son parada frecuente en tus bucles de YouTube, aquí vas a sentirte como en casa. Estéticamente, el video es como una mezcla del peso de Amenra con la dentellada industrial post-grunge de Helmet. (Ah, y si echas de menos los estrobos, echa un vistazo al clip de “Scent of Blood”.)
I’ve been told I have a soft spot for Scandinavian (and let’s be honest, Greek) bands. Guilty as charged. Even if you didn’t know Electric Hydra were a Swedish band, the connection is there. And they tap that register without all the black-metal ritualized faux-menace.
Siempre me han dicho que tengo debilidad por las bandas escandinavas (y, seamos sinceros, también las griegas). Pues sí, señoría, soy culpable. Aunque no supieras que Electric Hydra son suecos, la conexión está ahí. Y tocan esa fibra sin el postureo “ritualizado” del black metal.
The more closely you follow Electric Hydra, the more clearly the band reveals itself as something built to function, not to fray… You notice Åhman’s influence beyond the kit as he shapes both visual and musical moods, you realize what an unyielding linchpin the rhythm section is, and how Karlsson anchors it all lyrically. This track feels like the point where the entire band’s instincts fully click into place.
Cuanto más cerca le sigues a Electric Hydra, más claro ves cómo se están convirtiendo en una máquina perfectamente engrasada… Se nota el puño de Åhman más allá de la batería, dando forma al ambiente visual y sonoro, pillas lo infranqueable que es el muro rítmico, y cómo Karlsson lo ata todo con sus letras. Este tema suena a una banda que está encontrando su punto.
It’s been five years since Electric Hydra released their self-titled debut. I don’t know if From the Fallen (due soon!) will follow the latent male toxicity protest of 2022’s “Eyes of Time” or lean more toward “It’s All Just Dirt”: something that got heavier before it decided it was ready. But either way, the wait is nearly over.
Han pasado cinco años desde el debut homónimo de Electric Hydra. No sé si From the Fallen (¡ya casi aquí!) seguirá la protesta contra la toxicidad masculina de “Eyes of Time” (2022) o se inclinará más hacia “It’s All Just Dirt” (algo que se puso más pesado antes de darse por terminado) pero en cualquier caso, el final de la espera está a la vuelta de la esquina.
