¡Bravo Lee!

Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats releases Gather Sound

We hadn’t heard from Stray Cats bassist Lee Rocker since 2007 when he put out Black Cat Bone, the New Yorker’s last solo album. Last January, fourteen years later, he regaled us with a new album called Gather Sound.

This time Lee Rocker is accompanied by a trio featuring Buzz Campbell on guitar, Larry Mitchell on drums and Matt Jordan on keyboards. The veteran bass player from Stray Cats and Phantom, Rocker & Slick has been road-hardened while sending out, mile after mile, more than his fair share of good ol’ Rock & Roll energy. Despite being recorded in the middle of a pandemic, Rocker still has his sights set on adventure and has put out an extraordinary album featuring of 10 fun songs, full of good vibes.

Lee Rocker captures the real Rock & Roll essence in all twelve of the infectious melodies that are easy for anyone to listen to. Gather Round paints a picture full of backroads and gushing Rockabilly frills, testifying to the avid collector’s admiration for Elvis Presley and his presence at The King’s auctions. There are also nods to the Memphis sound, blazing harmonicas, homage to the pioneers of rock and roll bass, or a unique sound in the two covers on the album: “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat” and “Ophelia”, the latter with the characteristic New Orleans sound and its addictive piano, originally by The Band. The remaining eight tracks are Lee Rocker originals.

This is Lee Rocker’s most eclectic solo album. You don’t want to miss out on his masterfully-executed Slap Bass technique, the blues and Rock & Roll roots, or his energetic Rockabilly that will make anyone want to start shakin’ thanks to the generous splattering of pianos, harmonicas and swing in the percussion. There’s no better way to wrap things up than the iconic image of Lee Rocker waving to the audience, standing on his double bass. Bravo Lee!
