After the creative boom spawned by the pandemic, churning out album after album of new material, it seems that this year, touring is all the rage. And then there’s GA-20: they’re doing both.

Not only is GA-20 arguably the most handsome band on the blues scene, but this threesome is also one of the most hard-working bands around. Just take a look at their grueling touring schedule this year and you’ll see what I mean. After jam-packing 24 gigs in only one month this past Spring as they toured around Europe, they went on a seemingly interminable U.S. tour alongside the likes of George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Kendra Morris or Monophonics, before coming back here again to regale us with new material from their third and most recent album, Crackdown (Colemine/Karma Chief Records), released last September.

Crackdown is a gem of a record. It takes us on a 50s and 60s tinged juke-joint roller coaster ride that boogies its way around the U.S., from Detroit and Chicago to Boston, down to Texas and over to the Delta Mississippi and back again. The blues trio’s latest release bears an even more evident ‘GA-20 touch’ that, similarly to its predecessors, is authentic, but still feels like it’s for the now. The album’s 10 tracks have it all: heart-felt vocals, raw guitar pickings that aren’t overtone-laden or over-produced, glorious jazzy-hued drums that roll on and on, soulful (and even funky at times) grooves and catchy melodies. GA-20’s Tim Carman (drums), Pat Faherty (vocals / guitar) and Matt Stubbs (guitar) are masters of real, authentic blues. No other band today is doing what they’re doing so brilliantly. Their raw talent, their almost religious use of vintage gear and their painstaking diligence as they seek to honor their heroes and influences, are much more telling than any words could be.
«Crackdown» es una joya de disco. Parece sacado de un juke-joint de los años 50 y 60 mientras recorre sónicamente los EE. UU. casi enterito, desde Chicago hasta Boston y Texas, hacia el Mississippi Delta y de vuelta a Detroit. Este último álbum del trío bluesero tiene un ‘toque GA-20’ aún más evidente que, al igual que sus predecesores, suena auténtico y, a la vez, actual. Las 10 pistas lo tienen todo: voces sentidas, punteos de guitarra crudos que no están cargados de armónicos ni sobre-producidos, hipnotizantes líneas de batería con tonos de jazz, ritmos souleros (e incluso funky a veces) y melodías pegadizas. Tim Carman (batería), Pat Faherty (voz / guitarra) y Matt Stubbs (guitarra) son maestros de un blues de verdad y auténtico. And yet, they’ve gone to great strides to get the word out about their music and bring the general public closer to “real blues” graciously giving countless interviews all over the world. In fact, this isn’t the first time I’ve written about them here at Dirty Rock. I was fortunate enough to sit down and chat with the threesome back in April and see them play live in Madrid. I also got a sneak peek into their newest album when the single “Easy on the Eyes” was first released. But don’t just take my word for it. Apart from occupying the top slots of some of Spotify’s most choice Blues playlists and receiving nominations for various music awards, they’ve been featured in a legion of leading magazines and publications, including Guitar World Magazine, Total Guitar Magazine, The Guardian UK, or even Rolling Stone magazine, who hailed Crackdown as a “pure marvel and delight”.
Sin embargo, en innumerables entrevistas por todo el mundo, han dado grandes pasos para hacer correr la voz y acercar al público en general a su ‘blues auténtico’. De hecho, esta no es la primera vez que escribo sobre ellos aquí en Dirty Rock. It doesn’t matter if you’ve seen them before, or if you’re already heard all their records. Even if it’s the same band and the same music, I urge you to go out and see them play. Every night is a new show. And a new chance to be blown away by GA-20 and their blues revival.
Da igual que los hayas visto ya o si ya has escuchado todos sus discos… Aunque sea la misma banda y la misma música, hay que verlos tocar en directo. Cada noche ofrecen algo nuevo: una nueva oportunidad de dejarse llevar por GA-20 y su resurgimiento del blues.
