Regresa a España este mes de junio Scott H. Biram con nuevo disco bajo el brazo, «The One and Only», lanzado este pasado mes de marzo tras «Fever Dreams» (2020).
Biram continúa en esa encrucijada del blues, el punk, el hillbilly, country y el gospel, a través de su visión retorcida donde todo tiene sentido donde el asesinato, Satán, las mujeres golfas, mentirosos, beber whisky, engañar a las mujeres, una barbacoa, Jesucristo y los camiones, están en el lado opuesto de la cordura, especialmente porque la mayor parte del tiempo canta en lo que suena como un megáfono, con su pie izquierdo pataleando el suelo analizando aún más su mundo, el nuestro, cada vez más desgarrador.

¿Qué tal Scott qué podemos esperar de tu próxima gira española el próximo mes de junio en Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza, Vitoria y Avilés finalizando su gira europea? Después o antes de esta gira, ¿Qué tienes en mente?
Esta gira europea es en realidad la segunda parte de mi gira que comenzó en Estados Unidos el 20 de marzo. Estuve 5 semanas y media en los EE.UU., luego un viaje de 12 horas a casa en Austin, TX desde Nashville. Estuve en casa sólo un día antes de subirme a un avión a Europa para pasar otras 6 semanas. ¡Ha sido una gira muy larga! Pero lo he hecho antes y lo haré de nuevo. Esta es mi gira europea número 28 desde 2006. Comencé a hacer giras en Estados Unidos hace 26 años. Es una locura mirar atrás y ver eso. Cuando llegue a casa tengo más fechas para tocar y volveré a viajar en agosto. Mi amigo Blag Dahlia de The Dwarves me ha pedido que grabe algunas pistas para su próximo disco. Estoy deseando grabarlos tan pronto como llegue a casa. ¡Es un honor!
Es tu primer lanzamiento en 4 años con este «The One and Only», grabado en Hiram’s Hell Hole donde todo el álbum tiene ese sonido crudo en directo, con una producción muy limpia. Francamente, impresionado por la calidad y el carácter del mismo. ¿Fue un proceso largo y difícil? ¿Creo que la gran mayoría de temas se escribieron durante la pandemia?
Hiram’s Hell Hole es el estudio que tengo en casa, y es allí donde puedo pasar allí todo el tiempo que quiera para componer y hacer música. Escribí y grabé aproximadamente la mitad del disco durante la pandemia. De hecho, fue agradable tener tanto tiempo para trabajar en ello. Acababa de comprar una cinta análogica Studer de 2” y 24 pistas, así que estaba loco por usarla. ¡Tuve que quitar 2 puertas para meterla en el estudio! De hecho, terminé el disco en febrero de 2023, pero con el cambio de propietario en el sello Bloodshot, al cual pertenezco desde hace dos décadas, el lanzamiento del álbum quedó en suspenso un par de veces. En cuanto a la producción limpia que comentas, siempre intento encontrar el equilibrio entre lo-fi y alta fidelidad. ¡La magia está ahí en alguna parte!
Además de escribir, tocar y producir en el nuevo álbum, no hubo colaboraciones por parte de músicos en este disco, en cambio en «Fever Dreams» tu anterior trabajo si las tuvo con Jonas Wilson y Jesse Dayton.
Soy muy buen amigo de Jesse y disfrutamos tocando música juntos. Jesse tocó en 2 canciones en mi último álbum «Fever Dreams». Por cierto, es un gran álbum, ¡así que échale un vistazo también! Salió en 2020, por lo que se pasó un poco por alto. De hecho, creo que es uno de mis mejores discos.
¿Qué hace que una canción sea buena en tu opinión? ¿Tu canción favorita del nuevo disco?
Estoy muy orgulloso de “The One & Only Scott H. Biram”, y de cómo “No Man’s Land” puede destacar. En realidad, esa fue la última canción que escribí para el álbum, ¡pero se convirtió en la canción principal! ¡El vídeo también es genial! ¿En cuanto a qué hace que una buena canción? No lo sé… solo palabras que hacen que la gente sienta algo y que también tengan un buen ritmo en la letra. Luego música y sonidos que conmueven a la gente. Para que una canción sea cojonuda debes estar contento con ella en tu propio corazón antes de que resuene en otras personas. Lo fundamental es comprometerse con la canción.
¿Recuerdas la primera canción que escribiste y cuáles fueron tus primeras y/o más queridas influencias musicales?
(Risas) jaja, sí claro. Recuerdo que la primera canción que escribí fue en la escuela secundaria. Estaba viendo toda la guerra y la sangre en las noticias y escribí una canción llamada “Red World”. Era bastante malo. Ja ja. Pero no tan mala como “The Fart Song” que escribí ese mismo año. ¡Ja ja! ¡Yo era sólo un niño! Creo que la primera canción que realmente escribí y toqué como una “canción real” fue un tema duro y pesado para mi antigua banda, The Thangs, llamada “Communist Woman”. Aunque todavía era sólo un niño. Teníamos algunas canciones bastante tontas.
Te mudaste al pequeño pueblo de San Marcos, ¿es ahí donde vives ahora?, que está entre Austin y San Antonio. ¿Qué referentes culturales y musicales tenéis de ambos lados?
Nací en Lockhart, Texas, ¡la capital de la barbacoa de Texas! Crecí en la pequeña ciudad universitaria de San Marcos, TX (a sólo 30 minutos al sur de Austin), después de mudarme de un pueblo muy pequeño llamado Prairie Lea, donde crecieron mi madre y mis abuelos. He vivido en Austin desde 2003. Compré una casa allí en 2005. Crecer tan cerca de Austin y San Antonio me presentó muchas oportunidades musicales. Stevie Ray Vaughan solía tocar por 5 dólares los martes por la noche en San Marcos en un garito llamado Cheatham Street Warehouse cuando era muy joven. ¡Todavía sigo tocando en ese lugar hoy en día! El ahora gigante del country, George Strait, también solía tocar allí todas las semanas. Pude ver a Doc Watson en la legendaria sala Armadillo World Headquarters en 1979 u 80. También había muchos músicos de San Antonio como Doug Sahm y Flaco Jiménez. Siempre había algún tipo de festival de música en alguna parte. En la escuela secundaria solíamos ir a un lugar llamado Liberty Lunch para ver todo tipo de buena música. Vi a The Cramps allí, así como a Gwar, Reverend Horton Heat, Don Walser, Helmet, The Melvins, John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers. La lista sigue y sigue…
Al crecer, ¿hubo algún otro deseo además de tocar música, como ser predicador? Estoy seguro de que te lo han dicho que habrías sido bueno en eso.
(Risas) jajajaja en realidad soy un ordained minister. En realidad eso es sólo un título que solicité en Internet. Me han llamado predicador muchas veces por mis entusiastas bromas en el escenario. ¡De esa manera me considero un predicador de mi propia iglesia! Muchas veces me han dicho que podría haber sido un verdadero predicador. Creo que mi desdén por la hipocresía de la religión organizada nunca me permitiría ser un verdadero predicador religioso. ¡Solo soy un levantador de espíritus!
Eres un apasionado de la gastronomía por lo que sabemos. Ahora en Europa, suponemos que te estarás poniendo fino comiendo. ¿Qué es lo mejor y lo peor que has probado hasta ahora y qué es lo que más te gusta de España, culinariamente hablando?
Absolutamente. Soy un verdadero entusiasta del buen comer. Mis amigos y yo somos unos apasionados de la cocina. Es divertido y no sólo me da la oportunidad de hacer algo más que música, ¡sino que también tiene una gran recompensa al final! Siempre disfruto probando nuevos platos en nuevos lugares. Supongo que la peor comida que he tenido fue cuando me sirvieron palomas en París en mi primera gira europea. Fue asqueroso. En cuanto a España, es uno de mis lugares favoritos para visitar y disfrutar de la comida. También soy un gran admirador de Italia también. En España me encantan las carnes ahumadas, ¡pero no me canso de las aceitunas! ¡En casa nunca encuentro aceitunas tan buenas como las de España! ¡Me encantan las aceitunas españolas! Ah, sí, y paella, por supuesto… ¡y gambas a la plancha!
¿Cuál es el secreto mejor guardado para cocinar unas buenas alubias y unas acelgas salteadas, para ahumar y asar bien las carnes?
(Risas) jaja ¡grasa de tocino! ¡Las alubias y las acelgas necesitan grasa de tocino! Le pongo mucho vinagre blanco y salsa Tabasco a mis verduras. Con las carnes….¡lo mejor siempre es tiempo, tiempo, paciencia y compromiso!
¿Cuáles son los mejores restaurantes de barbacoa en Texas?
Soy un gran admirador de Opie’s BBQ en Spicewood, TX. La mejor salchicha es la de Smitty’s en Lockhart o City Market en Luling.
¿Qué lugares de Texas recomendarías a un turista?
Gruene Hall en Gruene, TX, Luckenbach, TX, Riley’s Tavern en Hunter, TX, Smitty’s BBQ en Lockhart TX, Parque Nacional Big Bend al oeste de Texas. Podría seguir y seguir.
¿Qué bandas y/o músicos te llaman más la atención en la actualidad?
¡Que todo esos ya están todos muertos jaja! Me gusta ir de conciertos de vez en cuando. Hablar lo suficiente bien sobre mi amigo Jesse Dayton, no acabaría. Le está yendo fenomenal sin mis elogios. Acaba de ser nominado a un Grammy este año. Estoy loco de ver su nuevo proyecto con él y nuestros amigos Ian Moore y Johnny Mueller. ¡Son todos malos guitarristas! Soy un fanático de todo lo que hace Billy Gibbons. Hay un tipo que veo mucho en Internet llamado Trey Hensley que toca una guitarra asombrosa con punteo plano. Es bastante asombroso.
Después de trece álbumes de estudio y casi tres décadas en el negocio, cuando miras hacia atrás, ¿Cuáles son los discos o momentos de los que te sientes más orgulloso?
Siempre he estado muy orgulloso de mi disco de Dirty Old One Man Band. Tengo muchas canciones excelentes mías en películas y series de televisión gracias a ese disco. Específicamente la canción “Blood, Sweat & Murder”. Fue genial escucharlo en la película “Hell or High Water”. Creo que la película se llama “Comanchería” en Europa. He recibido algunos premios a lo largo de los años.
Obtuve el premio al mejor álbum de blues en los Independent Music Awards por mi disco “Bad Ingredients”. También gané un premio Ameripolitan el año pasado al “Best Outlaw Male». Fue genial. Llegar a tocar en The Tonight Show con mi amigo Shooter Jennings fue una nota bastante alta para mí. No sé si eso volverá a suceder, ¡pero espero que sí! ¡Me encanta haber tocado en lugares bastante prestigiosos a lo largo de los años, como The Fillmore West, y en lugares legendarios como CBGB! Ja ja.
Si pudieras haber escrito una canción de rock and roll, ¿Cuál sería y por qué?
No tengo ningún derecho a fingir que escribí la canción de rock de otra persona. La canción pertenece a la persona que la escribió, incluso si alguien más se hace famoso por cantarla.
¿Qué artistas y álbumes estás escuchando ahora mismo mientras estás de gira por Europa?
Hoy estuvimos poniendo algo de James Gang. Ayer estuvimos escuchando a Willie Nelson y Guns n Roses. Estoy por todos lados en lo que respecta a música en la furgoneta. Hace un par de días estábamos escuchando a Slayer y Bruce Springsteen. Ja ja.
¿Y qué te depara el futuro?
¡Hacer más discos! Y hacer una gira por Australia pronto.
¿Hay algo que se nos haya escapado?
No creo.
¿Qué te gustaría decirles a tus seguidores españoles? ¿Alguna ciudad o concierto en particular que estés esperando con más ansias o todos? La última palabra es tuya.
Sólo que España es absolutamente uno de mis lugares favoritos para tocar y visitar en todo el mundo. El público español es de lo mejor, son de lo más incondicionales. Cada vez que lo visito, tengo la sensación que añado más seguidores a la lista a lo largo de los años que lo he visito. ¡No puedo esperar a volver! Gracias de nuevo por tu tiempo y cuídate.
Interview with Scott H. Biram:
What can we expect from your coming Spanish next June in Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza, Vitoria and Avilés finishing your European tour? After or before this tour, what do you have in mind?
This European tour is actually the 2nd half of my tour that started in the USA on March 20th. I did 5 1/2 weeks in the US, then a 12 hour drive home to Austin, TX from Nashville. I was home only one day before I hopped on a plane to Europe for another 6 weeks. It’s been a very long tour! But I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again. This is my 28th European tour since 2006. I started touring in the states 26 years ago. It’s pretty crazy to look back and see that. When I get home I’ve got some more dates to play, and back on the road in August. My buddy Blag Dahlia from The Dwarves have asked me to record some tracks for their next record. I’m looking forward to putting those to tape as soon as I get home. It’s an honor!
First release in 4 years Scott with this «The One and Only», recorded at Hiram’s Hell Hole where the whole album has a live raw sound, yethas very clean production. Frankly, I’m blown awayby the quality. Was it a long or difficult process? Werethoser songs written during the pandemic?
Actually I’m on Bloodshot Records for nearly 20 years. Hiram’s Hell Hole is the studio that I own, so I can spend as much time as I like in there. I wrote and recorded about half the record during the pandemic. It was actually nice to have so much time to work on it. I had just purchased a Studer 2” 24 track tape machine so I was excited to use it. I had to take 2 doors off to get it inside the studio! I actually finished the record in February of 2023, but with the ownership changing at Bloodshot, the album release got put on hold a couple times. As far as clean production, I’m always trying to find the balance between lo-fi, and Hi-fi. The magic is in there somewhere!
Apart from you writing, playing and producing thealbum, I thought I read that Jesse Dayton played onthis album. Why did you decide to become part of the»Hardcharger Records» family?
As I said, I’m not affiliated with Hardcharger Records. I’m just very good friends with Jesse, and we enjoy playing music together. Jesse played on 2 songs on my last album “Fever Dreams.” By the way, that’s a great album so y’all check that one out too! It came out in 2020 so it got a bit overlooked. I actually think it’s one of my best albums.
What makes a good song in your opinion? Yourfavorite song on the album?
On my newest album, “The One & Only Scott H. Biram,” I’m pretty proud of how “No Man’s Land” can’t out. That was actually the last song I wrote for the album, but it kinda turned into the main song! The video is pretty cool too! As far as what makes a good song? I don’t know…just words that make people feel something, and also have a nice rhythm in the lyrics. Then music and sounds that move people. I think you gotta be happy with the song in your own heart before it’s going to resonate with other people. The bottom line is being committed to the song.
Do you remember the first song you wrote and so whatwere your earliest and/or fondest musical influences?
haha yeah. I remember the first song I wrote was in Junior HighSchool. I was watching all the war and blood on the news, and I wrote a song called “Red World.” It was pretty bad. Haha. But not as bad as “The Fart Song” that I wrote later that year. Haha! I was just a kid! I think the first song I really wrote and played like a “real song” was a hard and heavy song in my old band, The Thangs called “Communist Woman.” I was still just a kid though. We had some pretty silly songs.
You moved to the small town of San Marcos, is thatwhere you live now?, which is between Austin and San Antonio. What cultural and musical references do youhave on both sides?
I was born in Lockhart, TX, the Barbecue Capital of Texas! I grew up in the small college town of San Marcos, TX (just 30 mins south of Austin), after moving from a very very small town called Prairie Lea, where my mom and grandparents grew up. I have lived in Austin since 2003. I bought a house there in 2005. Growing up so close to Austin, and San Antonio presented many musical opportunities. Stevie Ray Vaughan used to play for $5 on Tuesday nights in San Marcos at the Cheatham Street Warehouse venue when I was young. I still play there today! The now country giant, George Straight used to play there every week too. I got to see Doc Watson at The legendary Armadillo World Headquarters in 1979 or 80. Growing up, was there any other desire besides playingmusic, like being a preacher? I’m sure you’ve beentold that you would have been good at it.
haha I am actually an ordained minister. But it’s really just a title I applied for on the internet. I’ve been called a preacher many times for my enthusiastic stage banter. In that way I do consider myself a preacher of my own church! I’ve been told many times that I could have been a real preacher. I think my disdain for the hypocrisy of organized religion would never allow me to be a true religious preacher. I’m just a spirit lifter!
You are passionate about gastronomy from what weknow. Now in Europe, I guess you’re eating like hell. What is the best and worst thing you have tried to date, and what do you like most about Spain, culinaryspeaking?
I’m definitely a foodie. My friends and I are very passionate about cooking. It’s fun, and it not only gives me a chance to do something besides music, but it also has a great reward at the end! I always enjoy trying new dishes in new places. I guess the worst meal I ever had was when they served me pigeon in Paris on my first European tour. It was gross. As far as Spain, it’s one of my favorite places to visit and enjoy food. I’m also a big fan of Italia. In Spain I love the smoked meats, but it’s the olives I can’t get enough of! Back home I can never find olives as good as the ones in Spain! I love Spanish aceitunas! Oh yeah and paella of course…and Gambas a la plancha!
What is the best kept secret for well-cooked black eyedpeas and greens, for good smoking and roasting of meats?
haha bacon grease! Black eyed peas and greens need bacon grease!! I put a lot of white vinegar and Tabasco sauce on my greens. With Meats….its time time time, patience and commitment!
What are the best BBQ restaurants in all of Texas?
I’m a big fan of Opie’s BBQ in Spicewood, TX. The best sausage is from Smitty’s in Lockhart or City Market in Luling.
What place in Texas would you recommend to a tourist?
Gruene Hall in Gruene, TX, Luckenbach, TX, Riley’s Tavern in Hunter, TX, Smitty’s BBQ in Lockhart TX, Big Bend National Park in West Texas. I could keep going on and on.
What bands and/or musicians are catching your eyeright now?
They’re all already dead haha! I do like a good show now and then. I can’t say enough about my friend Jesse Dayton. He’s doing just fine without my praise though. He just got nominated for a Grammy this year. I’m excited to catch his new project with him, and our friends Ian Moore and Johnny Mueller. They’re all guitar bad asses! I’m always a fan anything Billy Gibbons does too. There’s a guy I see on the internet a lot named Trey Hensley that plays jaw dropping flat picking guitar. It’s pretty amazing.
After thirteen studio albums and almost three dacedes in business, when you look back, which are the records or moments you feel more proud of?
I’ve always been very proud of my Dirty Old One Man Band record. I’ve got a lot of great placements in movies and TV because of some of those songs. Specifically the song “Blood, Sweat & Murder.” It was cool to hear it in the film “Hell or High Water.” I think that films called “Comancheria” in Europe. I’ve one a few awards over the years. I got best blues album with Independent Music Awards for my “Bad Ingredients” record. Also won an Ameripolitan Award last year for “Best Outlaw Male.” That was cool. Getting to play on The Tonight Show with my buddy Shooter Jennings was a pretty high mark for me. Don’t know if that will happen again, but I sure hope so! I love that I’ve got to play some pretty prestigious venues over the years, like The Fillmore West, and legendary shit holes like CBGB! Haha.
If you could have written one rock and roll song, whatwould it be and why?
I don’t have any business pretending that I wrote someone else’s rock song. The song belongs to the person who wrote it, even if someone else gets famous for singing it.
What artists and albums are you listening right now on the road while you touring Europe?
We were jammin’ some James Gang earlier today. Yesterday we were listening to Willie Nelson, and Guns n Roses. I’m all over the place when it comes to the music in the van. A couple days ago we were listening to Slayer, and Bruce Springsteen. Haha.
And what does the future hold for you now?
Make more records! I might tour in Australia soon.
